Limited capacity for contour curvature in iconic memory.

چکیده
We measured the difference threshold for contour curvature in iconic memory by using the cued discrimination method. The study stimulus consisting of 2 to 6 curved contours was briefly presented in the fovea, followed by two lines as cues. Subjects discriminated the curvature of two cued curves. The cue delays were 0 msec. and 300 msec. in Exps. 1 and 2, respectively, and 50 msec. before the study offset in Exp. 3. Analysis of data from Exps. 1 and 2 showed that the Weber fraction rose monotonically with the increase in set size. Clear set-size effects indicate that iconic memory has a limited capacity. Moreover, clear set-size effect in Exp. 3 indicates that perception itself has a limited capacity. Larger set-size effects in Exp. 1 than in Exp. 3 suggest that iconic memory after perceptual process has limited capacity. These properties of iconic memory at threshold level are contradictory to the traditional view that iconic memory has a high capacity both at suprathreshold and categorical levels.

A Review of Capacity Limitation From Visual Perception to Short-Term Visual Memory of a Single Curved Contour
This study reviewed the literature regarding capacity limitation in processing curvature from visual perception to short-term visual memory (STVM) for a single curved contour with multiple convex parts. Capacity limitation was defined in terms of both set-size effects and decay with a retention interval. The results of psychophysical experiments and simulations involving signal detection theory...
متن کاملThe Sensory Components of High-Capacity Iconic Memory and Visual Working Memory
EARLY VISUAL MEMORY CAN BE SPLIT INTO TWO PRIMARY COMPONENTS: a high-capacity, short-lived iconic memory followed by a limited-capacity visual working memory that can last many seconds. Whereas a large number of studies have investigated visual working memory for low-level sensory features, much research on iconic memory has used more "high-level" alphanumeric stimuli such as letters or numbers...
متن کاملCapacity limitation in short-term visual memory for contour curvature.
I measured the difference threshold for contour curvature in short-term visual memory (STVM) using a two-interval forced-choice partial discrimination task. In experiments 1 and 2, the study stimulus consisting of 1 to 4 curved contours was briefly presented. It was followed by a single contour stimulus after a retention interval. The subjects judged if the test stimulus had a higher or lower c...
متن کاملAre There Multiple Visual Short-Term Memory Stores?
BACKGROUND Classic work on visual short-term memory (VSTM) suggests that people store a limited amount of items for subsequent report. However, when human observers are cued to shift attention to one item in VSTM during retention, it seems as if there is a much larger representation, which keeps additional items in a more fragile VSTM store. Thus far, it is not clear whether the capacity of thi...
متن کاملInfants get five stars on iconic memory tests: a partial-report test of 6-month-old infants' iconic memory capacity.
By the late 19th century, tests of adults' short-term visual memory—how much one retains from a briefly presented display—had acquired a familiar character: An alphanumeric array was presented and then removed, and participants were asked to report the items they had seen (Wundt, 1912). These whole-report tests revealed memory capacities of three to four items (Cattell, 1886; Sperling, 1960). H...
